Mobile Disco Safety

Health and Safety Legal Requirements for Mobile Disco DJs

Mobile Disco Safety is about your peace of mind ...

If you ask nothing else of your potential DJ, please ask them if they have:

  • Public Liability Insurance
  • Fully PAT tested equipment

Public Liability Insurance is a LEGAL requirement for any business and, though no-one likes to admit it, accidents can and do occasionally happen. PLI covers damages, legal fees, hospital treatment etc incurred as a result of any accident at your disco or party for which the DJ is held responsible.

There have been many discussions among DJs on the subject of mobile disco safety, and there are still some who disagree that Public Liability Insurance is a legal requirement. I have spent many hours researching information on this subject and have come to the conclusion that, unless the venue agrees (in writing) to cover the costs of all accidents, or the DJ is performing to an empty room, PLI is a legal requirement.

Many venues will ask if your DJ has PLI for up to £5million.

PAT stands for Portable Appliance Test. Any business using portable electrical equipment needs to have all their gear regularly tested for electrical safety. I'm sure you can see how this is a good thing for your guests, venue staff and the DJ! Again, these tests are a legal requirement and DJs should carry certificates proving all PAT documentation is up to date.

Quote from 'Barclays DJ Profile Information Page':

"Portable Appliance Testing is a legal requirement. Under the Electricity at Work Regulations 1989, all DJ/Mobile Discos will be required to have their electrical equipment tested at least once a year. See www.pat-testing.info/legal.htm."

Just as an added note: when your DJ sets up their equipment ready for the evening's entertainment, have a look yourself to make sure that all loose wires are taped, matted, or securely tucked out of harm's way. This is a measure of how much responsibility the DJ takes for you and your guests' Health and Safety.

The last thing you want during a party is to be worrying in case something happens which could blow up into a liability nightmare because you didn't check your DJ's mobile disco safety credentials. Check first. Then you can relax and have a great time!
